Welcome to the Lampshade Workroom !

I’m Kate - I run The Lampshade Workroom— a lighting studio tucked under the edge of the Illawarra escarpment in Jamberoo on the NSW south coast.

The Workroom began life as a plant nursery shed, and when the nursery moved, it became my upholstery studio. During Covid the upholstery business pivotted to focus purely on lampshade making and teaching.

What started as a quiet side project soon took root—fuelled by a love of natural textiles, colour and design and a surprising enjoyment for teaching.

From there, the glow grew.

These days, I practise my own kind of Lampology—meticulously crafting lamps and shades using natural textiles with bold and beautiful prints. I work in small batches, often in collaboration with photographers, designers, and specialist printers to produce lighting that feels personal and looks just as good off as it does on.

I also offer a custom shade-making service, creative makeovers, DIY kits, and a range of workshops—perfect for anyone who likes to add their own story to the lighting in their home.

My latest creations?

Stunning photographic images turned into cordless, rechargeable lamps made to glow anywhere—no plugs, no fuss.

We are the Genies behind the Lampshade Workroom

Kate Malfroy

After years of working as a professional upholsterer I started running upholstery and lampshade workshops due to demand, and quickly discovered I really loved teaching.

The demand for classes has continued ever since and during Covid - when I was overwhelmed with upholstery work - to save my sanity I decided to redirect the business away from upholstery to focus on lampshades - and The Lampshade Workroom was born.

The workroom is located in an idyllic location, in a small valley within the Jamberoo Valley on south coast NSW. Our property is nestled on the edge of rainforest, with a creek running from the Illawarra escarpment just a few metres from the workroom.

Because I love travelling, I also run workshops in other places around NSW - including scheduled events at other business locations, as well as private groups in homes.

Pipsqueak

No-one enters or leaves the Lampshade Workroom without the approval of Pipsqueak, who takes her job very seriously.

Being an Australian Border Collie, she has a number of traits which make her well suited for this role - extreme friendliness combined with strong herding instincts and attention to detail (obsessiveness) means she's usually got a better idea of everything that's happening on the place than Kate.
